Pictures of the Black Crater Fire

This is an image heavy post. If you are on a slow connection or small screen I apologize.

Found this in my inbox earlier today:

Good morning,

Here are some fresh aerial shots of the Black Crater fire taken early
this morning. The fire is up to about 2600 acres now. I saw flames
erupting and jumping approx 40-50 ft high at 6:30 AM. That is with
things cool and calm!
There is a lot of dry fuel up there. This afternoon will be a real
critical time when the winds and heat pick up again. The winds have been
out of the west and are pushing the fire predominantly east. Crossroads
is still the real danger spot as far as larger housing developments go.
Tollgate, BBR, Aspen Lakes are safe at this point. My plane was dusted
in ashes this morning but so far they have been cooled off by the time
they drop around Sisters.

Please remember our firefighters in your prayers today. They have a
rough road in front of them.

Your eye in the sky,
Bruce

  1. I fixed the images. Somehow the image urls were pointing to the secure portion of this site and wouldn’t show for anyone but me.

I just took a quick walk outside and it’s pretty smokey here in town. Not as bad as last night. It smells like campfires out there.

  2. According to sosforests.com 1500 people have been evacuated from Sisters and the fire is 0% contained. All I knew was there was a lot of smoke in Bend. I didn’t know homes were at risk!

I found a couple other local blogs mentioning the fire: chinooktc.blog and A Christian in a Strange Land

  4. We had just driven through the area Friday July 28!!! When we were at the observatory at the lava beds we saw storm clouds building up over the Sisters!

I was on Hinkle (today called “Henkle”) Butte Lookout in 1952 and 1953. I still feel like those trees that were my charges over 50 years ago are like my children. It is sad so many have been burned over the years! Too many homes built where they never should have been built!

    I live near Roseburg now.

Hope they get the fire our soon.

Does anybody know if the fire has gotten close to Graham Corral Horse Camp? I was planning to go there next spring with my friends and horses.

  6. Fire News

Good news from KTVZ: “Eight-mile-long burn ‘greatly reduces’ threat”. Red Cross has a shelter at at Sky View Middle School, which is literally a stones throw from my house…

  7. Thanks for the great pics. Hoping to do some hiking up south sister this weekend.
